Crimean War

The Eastern or the Crimean War became an important page of the history of Sevastopol

There were some reasons that led to this war.

In the middle of the 19th century the struggle among the main European countries for the domination in the Near and Middle East became more acute. Russia planned to capture the Black Sea straits in order to guarantee free passing for its ships into the Mediterranean. And Emperor Nicolas I also thought it was his duty to maintain order not only in Russia but in other states as well.

On the other side Great Britain and France strove for new markets in Asia. These plans coincided with the Russian Government's plans for domination of Balkan peninsular.

Great Britain tried to capture the Near and Middle East and to seize Russian territories: the Crimea, the Caucasus, Finland, Poland and the Baltic countries.

At the same time France was Russia's rival on the Balkan peninsular and in Turkey.

France and Great Britain also had pretensions to the Ottoman Empire in the territorial argument and these countries strove to disrupt of diplomatic relations between Russian and Turkey.

The argument about sacred possessions in Palestine between Greek-Orthodox and Catholic clergies became the casus belli to unleash the Crimean War.

It was necessary to decide who would posses the keys to the Bethlehem temple. It was decided that the Catholics would and the Russian tsar Nicolas I brought troops to the autonomous Principalities of Moldova and Valakhia, which were under sultan's power that time. Turkey was weaker then Russia and Nicolas I did not take into account other countries' intervention in the conflict. But Great Britain and France united against Russia to defend "weak" Turkey. The Turkish Sultan declared war on Russia.

The British and French Fleets appeared in the Bosporus as if threatening Russia, and the Eastern war broke out on October 4, 1854.
